fertilizing & overseeding

Here at Cutting Edge Lawn & Property Services we offer a few different fertilizer program options from a simple one time fertilizer application to our three and five application programs!
Why should I have my lawn fertilized?
The technical reasoning is that proper fertilizing with balanced applications throughout the growing season promotes thick, dense grass that can resist disease and weed invasions. The cosmetic reasoning is that a good fertilizer program will keep your lawn green, and attractive, and protects the curb appeal of your property!
When and how many times should my lawn be fertilized?
The question for many people is "when to fertilize?" For those of us who want our lawn looking its best, then it's a good idea to fertilize your lawn 3-5 times a year. Even if you don't consider a good looking lawn a high priority, you should at least fertilize twice a year to provide your grass with the minimum nutrients needed to hold off diseases, and survive the harsh conditions of the Dakotas. Fertilizing programs will start in early spring to give your lawn a good jump start, quick green up, and will end in the fall. According to most research, a good fall fertilizing is one of the most important steps to protecting your lawn for the long harsh winter ahead.
What type of fertilizer do we use?
We use granular fertilizer and the reason for this is that granular fertilizer feeds the grass the natural way, through the root system. Time release properties of the granular pellets provides long term benefits to the health of the grass plant.
What should I do after I have my lawn fertilized?
Most times, you can just sit back, relax, and wait for the fertilizer to work. However, fertilizer is activated by water so if there is no rain in site, it is a good idea to thoroughly water the lawn to get the fertilizer activated and soaking into the soil so it can quickly get to the roots of the grass.

We highly recommend our lawn aeration service along with a fertilizer program. Lawn aeration allows the fertilizer to be absorbed much better and more quickly and contributes greatly to an impressive looking healthy lawn!

What is overseeding and why should I have it done?
Lawn overseeding is the process off spreading grass seed over an already established lawn. Lawn overseeding helps to fill in bare spots and can help to greatly thicken the lawn. The healthier and thicker the lawn is, the better it can withstand drought and disease and also helps to crowd out unwanted weeds.

We highly recommend that we Power Rake/De-Thatch your lawn or Aerate the lawn before we put the grass seed down. This allows much better seed to soil contact, and greatly helps with germination rates of the grass seed. This will give you a better looking and more healthy lawn much quicker! It is also greatly beneficial to have us apply an application of starter fertilizer along with the overseeding. Starter fertilizers are high in phosphorus which helps to accelerate root growth, encourage vigorous root development, and reduces stress on new seeds.
